The short answer

Khanmigo is a good fit for families and educators who want guided practice inside the Khan Academy ecosystem, not a general-purpose chatbot that simply supplies answers. Its strongest differentiator is the Socratic approach: it asks questions and offers hints instead of doing a student’s work for them.

The catch is access. Individual Learner and Parent subscriptions are currently for adults in the United States with a U.S. billing address. Teachers can use the free teacher-tools plan only in supported locations, and classroom student access is generally tied to participating schools or districts. Check the official access page before paying: availability is more important here than the feature list.

What Khanmigo actually does

Khan Academy positions Khanmigo as an AI learning companion for elementary school through college-level subjects, including math, science, coding, history and humanities. The experience differs by account type.

If you are…Best useImportant limitation
A learner or parentGuided help, practice and writing supportIndividual access is currently U.S.-only and requires a paid subscription
A teacherLesson plans, rubrics, exit tickets, objectives and classroom-material draftsA free teacher account does not automatically give every student Khanmigo access
A school or districtStudent support plus teacher/admin toolsIt needs a Khan Academy Districts arrangement

The teacher tools are particularly practical for recurring planning work: Khan Academy lists lesson plans, discussion prompts, rubrics, assessments, text-level adjustments and classroom summaries among the supported workflows. That is more useful than a vague claim that it can β€œdo anything with AI.”

Pricing and access, checked September 15, 2026

For individuals, Khan Academy’s support documentation lists $4/month for the Learner plan and $4/month for the Parent plan. Both are currently available only in the United States. A parent can add eligible children to their account; individual users must meet the age and billing requirements shown by Khan Academy.

Teachers can access a free Teacher Tools subscription in the United States and selected other locations. That is not the same as universal student access: teachers outside a participating school or district cannot normally turn Khanmigo on for an entire class.

For schools with up to 1,000 student licenses, Khan Academy lists an Enterprise Starter option at $10 per student per year. Larger districts receive custom Enterprise pricing. Prices and country availability can change, so use the official links below as the final source before subscribing.

Where Khanmigo is genuinely useful

1. Students who need a patient study partner

Khanmigo works best when the goal is to understand a concept, practise a skill or get feedback on a draft. A student who wants a completed worksheet as quickly as possible will probably find the Socratic design restrictive β€” intentionally so.

2. Parents who want a structured option

The useful comparison is not β€œKhanmigo versus every AI tool.” It is β€œguided academic support within a familiar content library versus an open-ended chatbot.” For a parent, that narrower scope can be a feature.

3. Teachers reducing repetitive planning work

The free teacher tools can help draft learning objectives, rubrics, discussion prompts and exit tickets. Teachers should still review every output against their curriculum, student needs and local policy.

When a human tutor is the better choice

Khanmigo does not replace a qualified person when a student needs individual diagnosis, emotional support, specialist instruction or real accountability. A human tutor is usually the better primary choice for:

  • learning differences that need a specialist plan;
  • high-stakes or highly specialised subjects;
  • students who need motivation and live feedback, not just availability;
  • families outside the current individual-access regions.

For routine practice, however, a family can use Khanmigo between human sessions rather than treating the choice as all-or-nothing.

Our verdict

Khanmigo earns 8/10 for the people who can access it and want guided learning rather than answer generation. The teaching philosophy, Khan Academy content ecosystem and teacher workflows are meaningful advantages. The access restrictions are substantial enough that they belong near the top of any honest review, not in fine print.

Before subscribing, confirm your location and account type on Khan Academy’s current page. If you can access it, start with one real task β€” a math concept, an essay feedback pass or a lesson-plan draft β€” and decide from the result rather than a generic AI score.
